NEWS FOR SUMMER 2009

2008 Oustanding Forest Steward

Jim J

The Koochiching Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) has selected James Janousek
as the 2008 Outstanding Forest Steward.  Janousek worked for 36 years
as a state forester and is actively managing his 168 acre tree farm.

“Jim was selected to receive this award due to his lifetime commitment to
good forestry practices”, said Pam Tomevi, District Coordinator for the SWCD.

When presented with a plaque to commemorate his accomplishments,
Jim had the following to say:

“Good sound forestry practices start with a well planned harvest of mature stands followed by regeneration of the new stand either by nature or by planting.  I have been fortunate to have had several of the best loggers cutting and thinning my stands.  We are fortunate to have many excellent logging contractors available in our county.  Also, I have had several good dozer operators that have assisted me with site preparation, planting, access trails, and fire breaks.  If you consider planting several or more acres today, fine transplant stock is available from nurseries and the SWCD.  But be sure to pay close attention to competing grasses and other herbaceous plants as well as extensive damage caused from deer and snowshoe hares”.

Living Snow Fences

For 2009, the SWCD is proud to announce a brand new program. The Natural Resources Conservation Service, along with the Minnesota Department of Transportation have combined to offer cost-share assistance to landowners interested in developing living snow fences on the there property. MNDOT has developed priority areas along TH roads in Koochiching county that experience above average snow drifting. If you own a stretch of highway with dangerous snow drifting please give Justin a call at 218-283-1175. He will be glad to sit down and discuss some options you may have.

There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature-the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the winter.
